The History of the Rochester Weather Station

When I visit schools, I’m often asked how I became interested in the weather. Observing the weather as a high school student and as a college student studying meteorology at Lyndon State College in Vermont played a very important role in my professional growth. Growing up in eastern Massachusetts, I had many opportunities to be an eyewitness to a number of major weather events like Hurricane Gloria in 1985, and the March “Superstorm” of 1993.  I also had the unique opportunity and privilege to work at and intern at the Blue Hill Observatory, which holds the title for the longest, most homogeneous climate record in the United States. They’ve never missed a day of weather observations since April 1, 1885. Now that’s what I call dedication!

Irondequoit: There's an App for that. The town is the first municipality in Monroe County to have a mobile application to connect with its residents. The new app will be released for Android phones today.

The application will have town information and a way for residents to interact with town employees and departments. There will also be a "Report a Pothole" feature, town news and events, upcoming recreational programs, videos, photos, an interactive map and a link to Irondequoit's Facebook page.

What about the iPhone? Don't worry, the town is currently developing an app that will be available for the iPhone in the coming weeks.

Verizon files lawsuit in Irondequoit cell tower case

The town of Irondequoit has been served a lawsuit in connection with a proposed cell tower on firehouse property on Cooper Road.

The town was notified of the lawsuit by Bell Atlantic Mobile of Rochester, doing business as Verizon Wireless, late this week. The defendants in the lawsuit are the town of irondequoit, the Town Board, and town’s building department.

After signing a lease agreement with the St. Paul Fire Department in summer 2010, Verizon first brought an application for a required special use permit for the tower to the Irondequoit Town Board last August.

Cell tower proposal in Irondequoit could be headed to court

“All the town has done is kick the can down the road.”

That’s what a frustrated Robert Burgdorf, attorney for Verizon Wireless, told the Irondequoit Town Board at the end of its regular meeting Tuesday, Feb. 15.

Earlier in the meeting, the board had unanimously adopted a resolution that will require an environmental study and public hearing for Verizon’s proposed cell tower on the grounds of the St. Paul Boulevard firehouse at 433 Cooper Road.

Burgdorf said Verizon “will sue it out and bring action in federal court.”

Every computer I’ve ever owned has always been a PC running Windows or something similar to Windows (Linux).  That’s what real computer users do.  The “Macs” were just an over-priced toy coveted by a fanatical minority cult.  Well, (probably) due to the recent reconfiguring of astrological signs, I lost focus and bought an iPad – and I am sorry…very sorry…

Continuing with our discussion on the Chrome Browser, let's go a bit deeper into ways to customize this browser using apps and extensions.

Chrome - Google's Entry In The Browser Wars

After the Windows vs. Mac war has been waged, the second most "debated" issue among computer users is which internet browser is best.  For a variety of reasons I have typically recommended Microsoft's Internet Explorer to my clients using Windows...but that may be changing.  I've been using  the latest version of Google's Chrome browser (Version 8.0 released earlier this month) for a while now and I've found it to be better than Internet Explorer in its overall performance, available features and user interface.
