Medley Centre developer asks for $250-million in state funding

News10NBC has been told more than once that construction to transform Medley Centre in Irondequoit could begin this year. Now, the owner is asking for millions in taxpayer help.

Assemblyman Joe Morelle confirms Scott Congel is looking for $250-million in state financing for the project.

Town officials said in February that Congel already had a deal with a major department store.

Morelle says for funding on such an enormous scale, there's an obligation to ask hard questions. Morelle says he won't move forward until those questions are answered.

Buying green will help you save green with appliance rebate program

Buying green will help you save green with appliance rebate program

At a time when food and gas prices are steadily climbing, New York State is lowering the price of certain high-efficiency appliances.

It's a program that will help retailers, consumers and the state, all at once.

That money will make a big difference to some shoppers.

"350 dollars is a lot of money- it's not like 35 dollars, it's 10 times that. 350 is a significant amount of money. Everything is tough and tight right now... the people who might want to go out and buy a new refigerator, that might just give them the extra push to do it," says Irondequoit resident Steve Martrano.

Martrano is talking about New York State's "Buy Green, Save Green" high-efficiency rebate program. Starting Monday, the state will be giving away $3.5-million for people who buy an energy efficient refrigerator or washer.

Sears Store manager Will Zimmer is more than happy to hear it. He says last year's "Buy Green, Save Green" program was great for sales.

New Irondequoit bakery aims to please, and wants to be ‘the go-to place’

New Irondequoit bakery aims to please, and wants to be ‘the go-to place’

The closing time on the door of the Rolling Pin Bakery says 6 p.m., but Joe Hanlon calls it “a suggested time.”
"
“If the lights are on, we’re open; come on in and we’ll take care of you,” Hanlon said.

Irondequoit’s newest bakery is all about service.

“Our motto is, ‘yes is the answer, what’s the question?’” Hanlon said.

Joe Hanlon and his wife, Lisa, own and operate the Rolling Pin, but running a bakery is new to them.

Both Lisa and Joe have backgrounds in restaurant management, working in large chain establishments from Orlando to Los Angeles.

With their four daughters in tow, however, they returned to Rochester seven years ago to be closer to family and Lisa began a home-based bakery.

“My very first job, when I was 14 years old, was working for a local bakery,” Lisa Hanlon recalled. “I was fascinated. I loved working with batter, dough and pies. Baking is my passion.”

Irondequoit Planning Board: Still some questions about "I-Square"

The Irondequoit Town Planning Board says it wants more questions answered before signing off on a new development on Titus Avenue.

Irondequoit native Mike Nolan has been trying to get approval for the "I-Square" project. It involves tearing down several buildings near Titus and Cooper Road and replacing them with new restaurants, shops and outdoor space.

The Planning Board says there are still issues that need to be resolved with parking and landscaping before the project gets preliminary approval.

The board did not vote at tonight's meeting, instead reserving a decision until a special meeting on February 13th.

What's the plan for Medley Centre?

What's the plan for Medley Centre?

For three years now there has no construction at Medley Centre. It has an owner, two anchor stores but what's the plan?

Irondequoit Town Supervisor Mary Joyce D'Aurizio tells News10NBC not only is there a plan, but construction could begin at Medley Centre sometime this spring.

“The Supervisor said it looked like this year there were going to be some changes, but we'll all keep our fingers crossed I guess.” Lois Buttino shopped at the mall in Irondequoit long before it was the Medley Centre. Even now, she comes to shop at Macy’s. She's hoped for the longest that it would come back but she's not optimistic the current owner has the wherewithal to pull it off. “If they had looked into the Syracuse Mall, they would have realized he didn't have any money then. I understand the economy has been tight but I think it's been almost five years now.”

Buttino is talking Destiny USA in Syracuse where plans to create the largest mall in America have stalled.
