Gateway to Healing event benefits burn survivors — like sculptor Albert Paley

Renowned sculptor Albert Paley, who lives and works in Rochester, knows too well the pain and suffering of surviving a traumatic burn.

Thirty feet in the air, Paley was cutting a piece of metal with a blow torch July 26, 2002, when a gas line burst, engulfing him in flames. He was rushed to Strong Hospital with third degree burns over 30 percent of his body.

“I came close to dying and was put on life support,” Paley recalled. “After a month in the Burn Unit and two operations for skin grafts, I came home to begin the arduous process of physical therapy accompanied by several other minor surgeries. It was a long road to healing ... The experience was humbling and the journey life changing.”

West Irondequoit's "Big" takes home several awards from RBTL's "Stars of Tomorrow"

Rochester Broadway Theatre League's Stars of Tomorrow recently held its annual recognition ceremony that celebrates high school musical theatre productions in the greater Rochester area.

The Stars of Tomorrow made its debut in the greater Rochester area in 1999. Local high schools with fall and spring productions are invited to participate in the program. Schools are divided into four divisions based on school populations and judges are assigned specific divisions.  Areas of concentration are scored, and awards are given to schools or individuals with the highest scores within each category.

This year, 36 local schools from 4 divisions across a 9-county area participated in the Stars of Tomorrow program.  During the ceremony, 30 of the schools performed a selection from their high school’s musical theatre production, live on the Auditorium Theatre stage.
